Irish Wolfhounds - General Care

Irish Wolfhounds are not suited for apartment living. They do best with a yard. To own this giant breed, you ought to have a spacious house, yard, and car. These dogs like to feel a part of your family. A fenced area for exercise is a must with this sighthound. Irish Wolfhounds love to run. However, they will easily adapt to their family situation. In general, Irish Wolfhounds do not have higher exercise requirements than smaller breeds.

The Irish Wolfhound has a medium-sized rough coat, which needs regular brushing and combing. This breed is an average shedder. Pluck the coat to remove dead hair about once or twice a year.

Irish Wolfhounds - Breed History

The origin of Irish Wolfhounds can be traced back to as early as 273 B.C. The loyalty and hunting skills of these ancient dogs were mentioned in writings and depicted in ancient woodcuts.

The Celts took their hounds to Ireland around 1500 B.C. The Celts used Irish wolfhounds as the dogs of war. Known then as the "Cu" this name used to imply bravery and many warriors would prefix their own names with the word. Other names that the breed has been called are the Irish Hound and Irish Wolfdog. Currently in Ireland it is called the Cu Faoil. Irish Wolfhounds were used in battle to pull men off of horseback and at times to hunt wolves. In 1879, the Irish Hound appeared as a separate breed at the Irish Kennel Club Show in Dublin. Irish Wolfhounds were recognized by the AKC in 1927.
